From Zagsblog…
*** THIS CLINIC WAS THIS PAST SATURDAY OCT. 3, 2009***
My apologies for believing this clinic was this coming weekend…
You know me and clinics right now. I have been told, more than once the past 3 weeks of being on the road at clinics, if you have the chance to see Coach Knight – do it. He is the best in clinic format.
Here is your chance if you around New York City this weekend.

The event will feature sessions instructed by college basketball’s winningest coach Bob Knight (ESPN), as well as 2009 NCAA National Champion coach Roy Williams (University of North Carolina), and Leonard Hamilton (Florida State University), along with former NBA coaches Don Casey and Mike Fratello.

The Dream’s Angel McCoughtry was named Rookie of the Year and Marynell Meadors was named Coach of the Year in the WNBA. Congratulations to both!

McCoughtry, the No. 1 overall draft pick this year, led all rookies in scoring and steals and was fifth in assists.
“There was no doubt in my mind when I was scouting talent for the 2009 draft that Angel was a special player, and she proved that in her rookie season,” said Dream General Manager & Head Coach Marynell Meadors.
“There was a lot of competition for this award but she was by far the best. I’m so proud of her and this is only the beginning. I don’t think she has really seen what she can do yet.”
I remember the year before seeing Marynell at our Virginia game at Florida State and asking her who she was taking with the first pick. She said then, without hesitation… Angel McCoughtry. I asked Marynell, where will you play her? The inquiary coming from her roster full of players at Angel’s “positioin.” Her response showed her experience and being able to see past the “position pigeon-holing” we coaches often do… “On the floor… she’s a player!” Well done MM… congratulations!
McCoughtry, the No.1 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft presented by adidas, finished the season with two consecutive adidas Rookie of the Month honors.

Every member of a coaching staff, no matter the sport, will tell you one of the most unsettling feelings is being presented with the Monday morning Facebook photos. Student-athletes are becoming more and more savvy, they “lock” their photo’s so we (coaches) can’t get to them. That doesn’t mean that no one can get to them. Unfortunately, it hasn’t changed the behavior just made obtaining the photos more difficult. We all have to work harder to instill the trust and values to improve the decision making of the student-athlete first and help keep our student-athletes safer.
Let’s realize this… college kids to to parties. All of them. Athletes are no different. Even the most dedicated of athletes still go. It’s fun, it’s social, it’s their friends, classmates and peers. Drinking or no drinking, your student-athletes are going to be at parties and potentially in the wrong place at the wrong time at some point during their collegiate career. Athletes at parties is nothing new. What is new is the technology. Technology has put every intoxicated or high athlete on the front page of newspapers and all over the internet. We all saw Michael Phelps.
As coaches, we are going to need to be prepared to help our student-athletes through this. Helping them through it is the key, especially with female athletes. It can not simply be about discipline. Though discipline, responsibility and accountability are necessary, discipline is after the fact. Discipline is a reaction. We need to be proactive, help educate before they are in these situations. Empower our student-athletes to make better decisions. Hopefully, avoid as many situations as possible.
