Maryland’s “Giving Tree” – Alyssa Thomas

A story was shared with me earlier today.  Something we would not see if we are outside of a program.

While Maryland was celebrating their ACC Championship and after Coach Frese cut down the net, she took it and placed it around Alyssa Thomas’s neck, giving it to her.   Alyssa, only a sophamore has been a major catalyst for the Terps, ACC Player of the Year and nearly every other accolade you can thrust upon her.  Alyssa wore it for a few minutes, but then decided to place it around senior PG Anjale Barett’s neck, giving it to her.

Barrett was in tears.  It was a pretty powerful moment.

This really says a great deal about Alyssa Thomas.  She also took a snippet of the net that was cut down and went over and gave it to Katie Rutan, Xavier transfer who had to sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Someone mentioned, Alyssa is like “The Giving Tree” from the childhood library.  She’s willing to give all of herself and doesn’t really ever ask for anything in return.  Selflessness is one of the key pillers to a successful program and team.

Our six pillars in our Circle of Success:

Servanthood, Thankfulness, Selflessness, Humility, Love, Unity

If you haven’t read “The Giving Tree”, it’s a GREAT, powerful children’s book.
