It was a busy couple of weeks Sky Fans! Let’s get right to it…
I was able to see and visit with Swin Cash when she was in Charlottesville, VA to broadcast the Duke @ Virginia game on ESPN3. It was so great seeing Swin. Swin is looking great, healthy and doing really well this off-season! Swin said she is working out regularly, has added some needed muscle and can’t wait for the start of our 2013 training camp in May. If you didn’t see the game she broadcast live, you can check Swin out on ESPN3. Her broadcasting skills and analysis are fantastic. I won’t spoil all of Swin’s off-season surprises; follow her at @SwinCash for all the latest.
The Duke @ Virginia game provided a good look at the Virginia seniors and a sneak peek into the 2014 and 2015 draft classes as the #5 ranked Blue Devils only have one senior on their roster.
Who saw Maryland @ Duke? WOW, I didn’t see that ending coming. It was a great game, back and forth with Maryland taking a lead late. Maryland was right there until the final 10:00 then Duke really enforced their will defensively and finished strong. The defensive effort by Duke on Maryland’s Hawkins and Thomas was superb.
Then it was off to Harrisonburg, VA for a CAA showdown between Delaware and James Madison… the alma mater of our very own T Young! You know T was just in Chicago gracing the hardwood in Evanston at our recent Sky – Northwestern Clinic. Make sure to check out T’s ball handling skills in the clinic photos!
Also, look at this life size photo of our girl I found in the hallway of JMU’s Convocation Center! What do you notice?
Delaware and JMU are the top two teams in the CAA and the 71-64 Delaware victory was really a one-possession game until the last two minutes. There were 5 lead changes, 5 times the game was tied and neither team had larger than an 8-point lead. Great action!!
Coming up, I have a trip to DC for Georgetown vs. #23 Syracuse. I love how the Orange is playing, their zone is stifling at times and they are showing a balanced offensive attack. Georgetown’s “Sugar” Rodgers is certainly showing why many consider her a potential high pick with her 23.2 ppg, (second in the Nation to Jerica Coley’s 25.5 ppg for FIU, and slightly ahead of Brittney Griner’s 22.5 ppg for the #1 Baylor Bears) but the Hoyas are struggling a bit at 4-6 in Big East play and losing 3 of their last 5. They’ll try to get back on track at home vs. the Orange.
I’ll certainly be keeping one eye on the DePaul vs. Rutgers score as Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer goes for win #900 vs. the Blue Demons. Coach Stringer had just arrived at Rutgers when I was on the men’s staff there. Coach Stringer always found time to stop and talk and is a blessing to the game.
#9 Kentucky and #16 South Carolina square off later in the week. Only a game separates these two in the SEC. Kentucky only has 3 losses on the season, but two of the three have come since January 24th, a 55- 50 loss at South Carolina and a 75-71 loss to Georgia. The rematch against South Carolina will be outstanding. A’dia Mathies is coming off player of the week honors in the SEC. Tune in.
The week will round out with #6 Cal taking on #15 UCLA. 11-1 Cal meets 10-2 UCLA in a February PAC 12 showdown. These two teams are fun to watch. Both are exceptionally well coached, they both defend at a high level (38% FG% Def., and 56.4 PPG for Cal and 36.9% FG Def and 60.9 PPG for the Bruins). This will be a great match-up.
